So, You Want to Buy a Scottish Deerhound?
Public Education Committee

There are many things to consider before you bring a Scottish Deerhound into your home. First, the deerhound is not the dog for everyone. He's probably not going to bring back that stick you throw, he most likely will not bark and growl when someone approaches your front door, and that nice roast you put on the kitchen counter to defrost is an open invitation for a Deerhound to snack! He's big, he's busy as a puppy, and prone to long naps as an adult. If he's the dog for you, your life will never be the same. You will need to accommodate his size, his need for exercise and quality food and, of course, good health care. In return, you will have a faithful companion who will reward you with love and devotion throughout his life. Are you ready for the delightful experience of living with, as Sir Walter Scott put it, "the most perfect creature in heaven"?

Please read the following information. Find out all you can about the Deerhound. Research and talk to different breeders and pet owners. Subscribe to The Claymore, the bi-monthly publication of the Scottish Deerhound Club of America. Since few Deerhound litters are whelped each year, be prepared to wait before "your" puppy is available. When you find the right breeder and the right dog for you, you'll be glad you took the time to learn about the breed and the breeder from whom you purchase your puppy or older dog.

Welcome to the world of Deerhounds!
